plant a billion trees program
The Nature Conservancy,
which has been working in the Atlantic Forest since 1991 with a wide range of partners, has an ambitious plan to protect
and restore 30 million acres of this magnificent forest by 2015. In 2008, the Conservancy also launched an ambitious campaign
to restore one billion native trees
to the Atlantic Forest, bringing it back from the brink of destruction.
The Atlantic Forest in Brazil is considered one of the world's most endangered tropical forests -- only 7% of its
original area remains. Tropical forests like this one play a particularly special role in the fight to end global climate
change. And this reforestation effort to Plant a Billion Trees in The Atlantic Forest
will remove 10 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year -- that's like taking 2 million cars off the
road. The trees will be planted by The Nature Conservancy
staff and partners working in The Atlantic Forest of Brazil.

1 tree = 1 ton CO2/lifetime
- By planting 1 tree in the tropics, about 1 ton of CO2 will be taken out of the atmosphere over the course of the tree’s life. Our goal is to plant 1,000 trees by the end of this year.
- That's the equivalent of...
- » The yearly carbon footprint of 50 Americans, or
- » The yearly carbon output of 130 average-sized cars
